Making room for GTA 6 on PS5 starts with one distinction: free space on a USB drive is not the same as space you can play from. PS5 games run from console storage or a compatible internal M.2 SSD. USB extended storage holds game files for later. Check which job you need the drive to do before buying one.
| Location | Play PS5 games | Main use |
|---|---|---|
| Console storage | Yes | Install and play |
| Compatible internal M.2 SSD | Yes | Expand playable storage |
| USB extended storage | No | Move games out of internal storage |

Check the space you already have
Open Settings → Storage on PS5. If you need room, start with large installations you no longer use under Games and Apps. Removing an installation is a different operation from deleting progress under Saved Data, so check the menu name. Purchased games can be downloaded again from your library.

What to check before buying an M.2 SSD
Sony specifies PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe; M.2 SATA is unsupported. Effective cooling is required, and sequential reads of at least 5,500 MB/s are recommended. Check the dimensions including the heatsink. These are PS5 compatibility requirements, not a measured GTA VI loading-time or frame-rate improvement.

How many GB should you reserve for GTA 6?
Rockstar and PlayStation have not published an exact installed size. Do not choose storage capacity around a rumoured GB figure. When the download becomes available, use the requirement shown on your PS5 and distinguish the download amount from installed files.
