What order did the GTA games come out in?
These are the original release dates from Rockstar's own game pages. Later ports and re-releases don't get their own row, so each game appears once, on the day it first came out.

How many GTA games are there?
Thirteen are out, and GTA 6 makes it 14. October is the series' favorite month: eight of the 13 released games came out in October, and GTA Advance and San Andreas landed just two days apart in 2004.
Why is it called GTA 6 if it's the 14th game?
Because only the numbered games count toward the title. There have been six of them, GTA 6 included:
- Grand Theft Auto (1998)
- Grand Theft Auto 2 (1999)
- Grand Theft Auto III (2001)
- Grand Theft Auto IV (2008)
- Grand Theft Auto V (2013)
- Grand Theft Auto VI (2026)
The other eight don't carry a number: London 1969, Vice City, Advance, San Andreas, Liberty City Stories, Vice City Stories, Chinatown Wars and Episodes from Liberty City.
Who made each GTA game?
Rockstar North is the constant. It's credited on every released game except GTA Advance, which Digital Eclipse developed. Rockstar Leeds worked alongside North on Liberty City Stories, Vice City Stories and Chinatown Wars, and Rockstar Toronto joined North on GTA IV.
What is GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition?
It's not a new entry. Rockstar describes it as new-generation versions of GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas, which is why it doesn't get a row in the table. Those three games count once each, under their original release dates.

Which GTA should I play before GTA 6?
You don't need to do homework. Rockstar sells GTA 6 as Jason and Lucia's story, and the official synopsis doesn't mention anyone from earlier games. If you want some context, two games are worth your time:
- Vice City (2002). Rockstar's page opens with “Welcome to the 1980s.” GTA 6 goes back to the same city, only modern-day.
- GTA V (2013). Set in Los Santos and Blaine County, which Rockstar calls a satirical reimagining of modern Southern California, with three playable characters.
GTA 6 itself is set in Vice City and the wider state of Leonida. An easy score goes wrong, and Jason and Lucia end up in the middle of a criminal conspiracy that stretches across the state.

How long has it been since GTA 5 came out?
GTA V launched on PS3 and Xbox 360 on September 17, 2013. With GTA 6 dated November 19, 2026, the gap is about 13 years and 2 months, by far the longest between two numbered games. The previous record was roughly six and a half years, from GTA III in 2001 to GTA IV in 2008.
